A Malaysian Jungle Trek

I've been staying on Tioman Island, which is a small Malaysian island with blue water, sandy beaches and dense jungles.  I've never been to a beach that is so closely nestled into its jungle surroundings, and I'm finding it to be a surreal experience.

We went on a jungle trek across the island, and it was incredible.  The jungle was so lush, humid and untamed.  We saw monkeys, giant fern trees and ants the size of small elephants (well, that's an exaggeration, but they were really huge).  Also, Nicole tripped over and did a face plant.

I don't think these photos capture just how dense and isolated the jungle felt, but they probably give you a bit of an idea.

Despite the vegetation, there was still plenty of sunlight that crept through the canopies.

View from the top! You can see the water on the other side, which is where we ended up for our afternoon swim.
